Alpenspinner

Alpenspinner is a handcrafted reinterpretation of the "button whisk", an essential but impressive game. The revisited game consists of one or three wooden discs (two levels of difficulty), characterized by chromatic details inspired by South Tyrolean costumes, and a matching cord with leather handles. After twisting the lanyard, you can exert traction by widening and bringing the arms closer together to rotate the discs. Alpenspinner is available in three colours. The game is designed to be assembled at home, designed to resume the tradition of inventing and creating of South Tyrolean farmers.

The history of South Tyrol (Italy) is a story of skilled farmers, but also of skilled game inventors. Children conceived and built with what they had at their disposal. Many games have been handed down mostly by word of mouth and it is a shame not to see their realization in today's South Tyrolean craftsmanship. One game that has been handed down is the "button whisk" made of poor materials, just a thread and a button. 

 

The project brings on the market a revisiting of the old game, turning it into an interesting and durable object suitable for children, but also for adults looking for a pleasant gift or souvenir. The Alpenspinner game maintains the logic and essentiality of the homemade "button whisk", but revised in graphics and shape to adapt to contemporary aesthetics.

REVIVING TRADITION
The history of South Tyrol is also the history of farmers who have been skilful inventors of games. Children invented and built games with what they had available. The games were mostly handed down by word of mouth and it is a shame not to see them realised in contemporary handicrafts.

OBSERVING THE PAST
In order to achieve the idea of Alpenspinner, I collected pictures, sketches and memories. 
Excursions here in my region and in Bavaria, as well as interviews with acquaintances and relatives, helped me to better define what object to take from the past.

THE GAME
Alpenspinner is a pleasant pastime that relaxes but at the same time improves dexterity, concentration, coordination and helps train arms and shoulders. The game is pocket-sized and lightweight. It is a fun game for children and adults.
